THE NEWBORN KING: O FAVORED ONE

A contemplative reading for Advent.

He came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”

LUKE 1:28 ESV

When an angel appears to Mary announcing that she has been chosen to bring the Messiah into the world, he calls her "O Favored One", a phrase that is sometimes translated as "full of grace". It is a title and role that she had done nothing to earn, just as the early church would proclaim God's ultimate gift of grace free of any requirements.
